Fusion 2008

The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago hosted its second challenge competition titled “Fusion 2008” on Saturday 19th April 2008. The competition was an exciting, physical and intellectually challenging sporting event that required courage, fortitude, stamina, commitment and teamwork.

Twenty-three (23) teams participated with four persons on each team. Each team was required to hike/hash selected mountain trails within Trinidad as well as complete a series of team- work/problem-solving activities.

Competitors were required to meet at Brasso Seco (at the visitor’s facility) for 5:00am where team gears, first aid and team names were checked. Fusion was kicked off at 5:45am with a 20 metre relay race where team members’ legs were tied with persons facing alternating directions.

On completion, teams had to keep the cloth with which their legs were tied as the Fusion token. A 17 mile trek (using full team – 4 persons) to Madamas Waterfall and back was next where the time of completion ranged from 3hrs to 5hrs 11mins. During this trek teams had to answer 5 multiple choice questions with each incorrect answer resulting in a 5 minute penalty.

As if this was not enough, at 12:15pm 3 persons per team were then required to trek from Morne La Croix to Caura. This trek required a constant hill climb then a long decent. This trail was cleared by several of the officials and required 8hrs of swiping and cutlassing. This wide and beautiful trail allowed teams to ‘enjoy’ themselves achieving a range of times from 1hr 17mins to 2hrs 44mins.

Teams now had to assemble at the foot of the Lady Chancellor hill at 4:30pm. At 5:02pm teams (using 3 persons per team) were required to run in a clockwise direction around the Queens Park Savannah to the roundabout at the Queens Royal College. Teams continued along Maraval Road onto French Street and onto Wrightson Road. They continued until the zebra crossing at Crown Plaza, crossed Wrightson Road and proceeded into the Cruise Shipping area at the Port Authority with their fourth team member. This leg of the event ranged from 23 to 55 mins.

The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago’s Fusion 2008 which was coordinated, planned and managed by staff of organization, led by Charles Bobb-Semple, was a great success. The event received high kudos (email and word of mouth) from all participants especially the visiting teams namely Republic Bank, Atlantic LNG, Hikers Inc., Central Bank, Angostura, Fluor/Summit Alliance, Micro Software Designs Ltd., Servus Ltd., Maersk and Beauty Body and Spa. The support of Management and Staff of the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago was instrumental in the successful deployment of this venture.

About Fusion

In the 1970’s, during the running craze, people found that road races were not enough; they found adventure in the untamed wilderness where waterfalls and highlands became backdrops for adventures to come. In 2006, the adventure race Fusion was birthed in Trinidad and Tobago as a means of promoting the sport in Trinidad and Tobago; thanks to our title sponsor “The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago” in 2007 14 teams participated. By 2015 this number grew to 108 teams.

The event, which recognises three categories, namely Male, Female and Mixed, takes competitors through mountain trails and other terrain, offering the opportunity for persons to discover the veiled treasures of the island from a unique perspective.  Additionally, it offers intrigue as participants are only informed of what is required of them at each successive stage; emphasis is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement.  Pushing the limits of endurance, successful teams of 4 band together to overcome and adapt to the challenges set before them both physically and mentally; it is a platform for personal development in a fun and positive team environment. This event tests team spirit, camaraderie, ingenuity, skill and commitment while exploring the boundaries of what’s possible by pushing oneself physically and mentally, instilling a sense of accomplishment while providing an enriching and fun experience.

Our slogan – “When you cross the finish line, you’ll know a little more about yourself” aptly represents Fusion’s objectives.
